Lu Zhan (born in 1981), a native of Cixi, Zhejiang, is a professor and doctoral advisor at Zhejiang University . He received his Bachelor of Science degree from the Department of Chemistry, Zhejiang University in 2003 (recognized as a Zhejiang Province Outstanding Graduate) and was admitted directly into a Ph.D. program. He conducted his doctoral studies under the supervision of Academician Shengming Ma and obtained his Ph.D. from the same university in 2008. From 2008 to 2009, he conducted postdoctoral research on palladium-catalyzed oxidation reactions involving molecular oxygen in the group of Professor Shannon S. Stahl at the University of Wisconsin–Madison . From 2009 to 2012, he moved to the research team of Professor Tehshik P. Yoon at the same university to conduct research on visible-light photocatalytic organic cyclization reactions. He joined the Department of Chemistry at Zhejiang University at the end of 2012 as a specially appointed researcher. He was promoted to professor at the end of 2018 and currently serves as an independent principal investigator at the Zhejiang University Center for Chemistry of Frontier Technologies.
His research primarily focuses on Earth-abundant metals (iron, cobalt) chiral ligand design and asymmetric catalysis, as well as visible-light photocatalytic reactions. He developed non-C2-symmetric nitrogen-containing tridentate chiral ligands (CUT ligands), enabling low-valent metal-catalyzed asymmetric hydrofunctionalization of alkenes. He has published over 130 papers in journals such as the Journal of the American Chemical Society and Angewandte Chemie International Edition, with a total citation count of over 9,000, and holds over 10 authorized Chinese invention patents. His research achievements include iron-catalyzed sequential hydrosilylation for the construction of benzosilacycles (Nature Communications, 2025), cobalt-catalyzed oxysilylation of alkynes (ACS Catalysis), and Markovnikov-selective hydroelementation of terminal alkynes (Chemical Society Reviews, 2024). The doctoral dissertation he supervised, titled "Research on Cobalt-Catalyzed Markovnikov-Selective Hydroelementation of Terminal Alkynes," was recognized as a 2023 Zhejiang Province Excellent Doctoral Dissertation. He has received funding and awards such as the National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars and the Thieme Chemistry Journal Award.
